Every great City has a Heart. How will Vernon’s grow?

As I mentioned in last month’s blog, since joining the Nyrose & Associates team at Coldwell Banker Horizon Realty, I have been concentrating my efforts at Predator Ridge, the golf course community between Kelowna & Vernon.

When I first moved back to British Columbia I had the pleasure of living at Predator Ridge for three months. It didn’t take me long to figure out that one of the many reasons that homeowners have chosen to live at Predator Ridge is because it has the feeling that it is so far away from everything, but really it’s not.

Each Sunday afternoon I would look forward to my scenic 14km drive along Commonage Road into Vernon to run errands and get a bite to eat. The 15 minute drive along this meandering road, tucked away from Highway 97, always offers me a reason to slow down and take in nature’s wonders. Did you know that the Commonage remains one of the top birding routes in the North Okanagan?

When in Vernon, I would pick up my groceries, drop off dry cleaning, grab some local B.C. wine and usually eat dinner “In town”. What I learned is that the city of Vernon is important to the residents of Predator Ridge for two reasons – they look to the city as a necessity, but also as an amenity. When I heard that the “Historic Downtown” would continue to develop as a shopping and entertainment destination with more retail, restaurants, coffee shops, pubs and grocery stores, I felt the need to share!

The revitalization of the downtown has been a priority for Vernon for many years, and in 2010 the City of Vernon asked the community what they wanted the downtown and City Centre to be today and in the future. Based on what they heard, they drafted the City Centre Neighbourhood Plan.  This is exciting news for the residents of the North Okanagan as well as Predator Ridge!
