New strata legislation came into effect in November 2022 that deemed almost all rental by-laws no longer enforceable. A couple of bylaws that remain in effect include short-term rental bylaws prohibiting Airbnb type rentals and age restrictions for 55-and-over strata communities/buildings.
This was done as part of the BC government's commitment to open up more rental spaces in our communities.
For those who are looking at buying condos, townhomes or other stratified properties, it may open up more choice or investment opportunity. When looking, it is best to use the services of a trusted real estate professional so you fully understand the strata bylaws and any implications of this new legislation.
