What are the most common mistakes people make when moving?

June 5, 2020

"What are some common mistakes made when moving?" That's one of the most asked questions when buyers and sellers are getting ready to move. After all, they want to avoid the pitfalls. We've been a part of a lot of moves, so we love to ensure our clients' moves are as stress-free (and mistake-free) as possible.

Whether you are moving into your first or fifth home, moving day is an exciting time for everyone! But regardless of the excitement you feel to be moving, let's be real - you probably can't wait for the process to be over.

Moving can be stressful, long and exhausting. It can be easy to underestimate the amount of items one owns and the time & effort that goes into the process.

Important things to keep in mind while moving:

Make a Timeline

Moving day is an exciting time, but whether it is your first time or you are a seasoned veteran, it can become easy to overlook just how much time the moving process takes. To avoid as much stress leading up to the date as possible, form a timeline of events that need to occur in order for you to be in your new home, including calling movers, sorting through your items, packing, selling items, taking things to the dump etc. Once you have formed your timeline, add a couple extra days to it. This will allow for some lead time should something occur. With our years of experience, we are happy to offer advice when creating this list to ensure the timeline works accordingly.

Do Various Walk-Throughs & A Final Sweep

The moving process can be very overwhelming. One of the largest mistakes we see made during the process, is underestimating just how many items one has in their home. People become so used to the main living spaces of their home that it becomes easy to forget about the items that are down in the basement, in storage or in rarely used closets, cupboards and spaces. We suggest that you do a walk through of your home well in advance and make note of what items are in each room. Creating an inventory of what's in your home will make packing easier. Then, do thorough walk through of each room as they are packed up. Look in all of the corners and crevasses of the room; you would be surprised what can be overlooked! Before leaving for the new home, do a large final sweep of the home. If possible, ask a friend or family member who wasn’t a part of the packing process to do the final walk through with you as a fresh pair of eyes.

Research Your Moving Company Options

If you are choosing to use a moving company, ask us! We have done the research for you and have a few preferred moving companies we can recommend. Or, ask friends who have recently moved and read reviews to find the best moving option for you. Moving companies will be handling all of your most valuable possessions so it is important to use a company you can trust. Schedule the moving company with as much notice as possible.

Organize the Boxes

To make things not only easier for the movers but your future self, organize and label your boxes by room. This will be a tremendous help in the long run to ensure that all boxes are brought to their proper rooms when it comes time to bring them inside and unpack. This will also help with the efficiency of the movers, organizing boxes together based off of rooms will mean less amounts of trips inside! Ensure fragile and frequently used items are largely labeled on the box and placed into the moving truck last for convenience.

As your REALTORS® we’re here to help make your home buying process as stress free as possible, from beginning to end!
